In a contract valued at more than œ150,000, Deeside-based Remsdaq have provided upgrades to the StarWatch security systems at the BAE Systems shipbuilding yard (formerly Vickers) in Barrow-in-Furness. The yard was responsible for building the Vanguard (Trident) ballistic missile submarines in the early 1990s. The upgrade comes in the wake of the British government?s decision to award BAE Systems with a contract for the design, build and initial in-service support of three new Astute Class submarines at the yard. The original StarWatch system was commissioned during the building of the Trident and has proved virtually maintenance-free for ten years. The new installation centres round a 44 portal access control system employing turnstiles. Given the sensitive nature of the work at Barrow, turnstiles are seen as an effective solution to tail-gating. The strict access control allows BAE Systems to create precise mustering lists in the event of an emergency. Mark Webster of Remsdaq says: ?BAE Systems? decision illustrates a satisfied client committing to use Remsdaq equipment for at least another ten years. As part of the contract Remsdaq made extensive modifications to turnstiles produced by Divo of Belgium. The Divo units have a demonstrable track record in withstanding the salt corrosion caused by this exposed coastal location as well as being well suited to high traffic flows. At its peak, the system at VSEL handled up to 15,000 people entering or leaving the site at peak times.?
