School refurb

by Mark Rowe

A case study of Barton Seagrave School, a co-educational primary in Kettering. The school for children aged four to 11 has seen a £4.2m refurbishment.

GSSArchitecture specified ASSA ABLOY’s timber doorsets for the project. The physical security product company says that schools require some of the greatest durability ratings of any doorset installation, and ASSA ABLOY’s timber doorsets fulfil requirements outlined in the Government’s Best Design Practice for schools.

DC500 CAM-motion door closers have been installed, providing the makers say a low opening force. This meets the Equality Act (EA) – specifically BS 8300 and Approved Document M (ADM) of the Building Regulations, so that buildings will be fit for a range of users, including children and those with disabilities.

GSSArchitecture has also retro-fitted ASSA cylinders in a master key suite at the school. ASSA ABLOY stainless steel door furniture and ASSA modular locks were also supplied.

Chris Chapman of GSSArchitecture said: “GSSArchitecture were appointed to provide proposals to increase the capacity of Barton Seagrave Infant and Junior Schools. The solution included major refurbishment and extensions to amalgamate two separate buildings to create a single Primary School building and increase the capacity from 2 Form Entry 420 pupils to 3 Form Entry 630 pupils. In doing this, it created the opportunity to address a number of issues with the existing buildings and grounds including a more welcoming arrival experience and increased more efficient car parking facilities. A live school environment meant the works needed a phased approach and careful planning to secure the safety of all its occupants. It is important to provide the right level of security and safety in schools, while at the same time maintaining a welcoming learning environment for pupils. Products from ASSA ABLOY are reliable, durable and will therefore stand the test of time”.
