Perimeter defence with AI

by Mark Rowe

Among the new products from Hikvision is HeatPro, a thermal series of cameras. The designers say they’re especially for perimeter protection and fire prevention.

The HeatPro Series Cameras feature deep-learning thermal video analytics, and object temperature measurement and fire detection with real-time alarms. Features like human and vehicle classification, visual and auditory alarms for perimeter protection, and temperature exception alarms for fire prevention make them suitable the makers say for SMB (small and medium-size business) applications.

The new HeatPro Series is among products featured during Hikvision’s April Insight online events. The HeatPro session runs on April 28 from 10am to 11am.

The cameras focus on short-range perimeter protection (zero to 50m), where they deliver target detection and classification. The use of AI means that the cameras can distinguish between a person and a vehicle. This comes in especially useful when the two targets are close together. Traditionally, these would be recognised as a single ‘target’, but intelligent algorithms mean that they can be detected separately, increasing accuracy and making for fewer false alarms.

Thermal cameras are also able to locate potential threats in zero visibility for humans, where a conventional camera could not. They do this by detecting the latent radiation emissivity of an object, rather than relying on visible light. This means they can operate in all weathers and in the darkest night the manufacturer says. They also don’t emit light, which means their presence is not obvious, making them useful in scenarios where they need to be hidden.

The HeatPro Series is also designed for simple install, three-step deployment, bringing set up time down to 30 seconds, whereas traditionally thermal cameras require specialist engineers to configure and double check. The HeatPro also comes with the ability to measure temperature. One scenario is where overheating could lead to fires. The camera can provide non-contact temperature measurement. This means that safety staff can act earlier, potentially preventing a fire from beginning. The camera can trigger a fire alarm faster than a smoke sensor. The temperature measurement function can also be used to help check any potential overheating issue and troubleshoot problems.

As for models and options, you can choose bullet (pictured) and turret forms, and Bi-spectrum or single lenses. The cameras can be built into working with network recorders (NVRs), AX PRO alarms, and the Hik-Connect software for managing security devices from a smartphone or tablet; for real-time mobile alerts by phone.

Stefan Li, Director of Thermal Products at Hikvision, says: “Dedicated to bringing professional protection solutions to the mass market, these cameras provide perimeter protection with unparalleled accuracy, and fire detection with superlative sensitivity. Hikvision HeatPro Series provides professional protection made simple.”
