The University of Reading is seeking a committed, proactive, and highly organised Night Shift Supervisor to join our Security Services team. This key role ensures the safety and security of our staff, students, and visitors throughout the night, while supporting smooth and effective campus operations. Working 12โhour shifts on a 4 on / 4 off rota, you will lead a team that is central to maintaining a safe, professional, and reassuring environment across the University estate.
About the Role
The Night Shift Supervisor is responsible for the leadership and coordination of night-time security operations. This includes the management of up to four Security Controllers and nine Halls of Residence Patrollers, ensuring the delivery of a responsive, highโquality, and communityโfocused security service.
You will oversee the deployment of staff, deliver supervision and guidance, and ensure that operational duties are carried out in line with University policies, professional standards, and legislative requirements. Your role will also involve the effective use of modern electronic security systems—including CCTV networks, intruder alarms, and fire detection equipment—to maintain vigilance and protect the University’s people, property, and assets.
- Ensure the Security Control Room remains fully operational at all times and that all monitoring and incidentโresponse functions are carried out effectively.
- Supervise all mobile and foot patrols, ensuring visibility, professionalism, and adherence to assignment instructions.
- Prepare and maintain clear, accurate assignment instructions, ensuring compliance with best practice and contributing to the development of wider security policies and procedures.
About You
We are seeking a confident leader with strong decisionโmaking skills, excellent communication, and the ability to remain calm, clearโheaded, and professional during demanding situations. You should have previous experience supervising staff in a security, emergency services, or similar operational environment. A working knowledge of CCTV monitoring, emergency responses, and security legislation is highly desirable.
You will also be skilled in planning, incident management, and maintaining effective working relationships across teams and departments.
