SRI on improving the image of private security

by Mark Rowe

Improving the image of private security – where are we and what needs to happen? That’s the question the consultancy Perpetuity Research is posing, in its latest study of the sector under the Security Research Initiative (SRI).

The researchers say that the perception of the private security sector is generally recognised as limited by stereotypes, the difficulty of shaking off outdated perceptions, and a lack of understanding of the true value of security. While some of the criticisms levelled at private security may be fair, there is growing evidence of the professionalisation of security (not least, as set out in SRI studies over the years) and the potential that the overall perception does not match the reality. This is not a negligible issue, the researchers argue; a poor image has consequences, such as difficulties recruiting capable people, being overlooked by others as a potential ‘partner’, being under-valued by procurers, and security leaders having less status than other professionals.

Hence Perpetuity Research is seeking the views of security people on:

– What is the perception of private security?
– How does this differ among groups and in respect of different aspects of private security?
– What actions would help improve perception?

The aim of the research is to better understand the issues that need to be tackled and the actions needed to bring perceptions in line with reality and to create a positive image.

You can share your views, anonymously, via their survey. It is open to any type of security professional and expert. The survey takes about ten minutes to complete; the deadline for responses is Friday, May 23. Further comments are welcomed while taking the survey.
