CCTV Evidence

Trainers Tavcom report that a new course can help in addressing concerns about CCTV effectiveness which were expressed at the recent Security Document World Conference in London.

Detective Chief Inspector Mike Neville, who heads the Met’s Visual Images, Identifications and Detections Office (Viido) and Graeme Gerard, Deputy Chief Constable of Cheshire Police both called for increased training for officers and "more intelligent use of the technology".

In anticipation of these developments, Tavcom Training’s CRO5 course – ‘Gathering Video Evidence’ – was introduced in January 2008 after lengthy consultations with the police, Home Office, transport companies and other interested parties. The result is a new BTEC certificated training course that provides a necessary understanding of how CCTV footage can be collected, exported and used to good effect within the UK’s legal system.

Subjects covered in the three days include compression engines, the Operational Requirement, video storage and extraction, audit trails, data protection and other legal considerations.

"These recent statements and media reports clearly support the argument we have been making for many years" said Tavcom’s Director of Training, Mike Tennent. "Many public and private organisations allocate very large sums of money to ‘state of the art’ CCTV technology. An additional and modest investment in professional training would allow them to release the full potential of these systems. Our position has always been that sound training is synonymous with cost effectiveness and it cannot be neglected, ignored or viewed as an unnecessary luxury. CCTV end users and all others involved with gathering and forwarding video evidence who attend our new CRO5 course will learn the critical importance of expert tuition and they will quickly begin to reap both the practical and financial benefits."
