Essex Police are trialling Securicor Information Systems? Facial Biometric Researcher system that automates the process of matching still images from CCTV and composite sketches or e-fits, with their database of more than 160,000 images. The Facial Biometrics Researcher uses FaceIt facial recognition software from US manufacturer Visionics. Detective Sgt Steve Jones at Essex Police Divisional HQ in Southend said: ?Essex Police have been using Securicor?s Video Witness for some time. Biometrics is an exciting new technology, and I am hopeful that this system will prove that its time has come.?
Dr. Joseph J. Atick, Chairman of Visionics, said, “Face recognition is being adopted hand-in-hand as police agencies around the world computerise and automate their mug shot booking systems. The robustness of our technology in working with a wide range of image qualities and formats, including composite sketches and live images in particular, has made FaceIt the de facto standard within the law enforcement community. Working with an established, recognised systems integrator targeting the criminal justice sector, the Securicor-Visionics partnership is well-positioned to meet this growing market demand.? Drew Paterson, Biometrics Marketing Manager at SIS, said: ?Essex Police are helping speed up the effective application of biometrics to fight crime. Our partnership with Visionics gives us the opportunity to work with police forces to speed up the process of suspect identification, increase crime clear up rates by accurately identifying more suspects, and improve productivity by automating the facial matching process.?
