The government sought to stress how mobile phone theft can be tackled as new research showed a big rise in mobile phone crime. At St Olave?s School in Southwark, south London, anti-mobile theft measures include a ban on phones for the under 16s; a security marking programme for all pupils; self-registration of phones by pupils is encouraged; work with an assigned schools beat police officer; and at home time the school buses pupils away from the school to a safer dispersal point. The Home Office research report Mobile Phone Theft confirms that mobile phone theft has risen by 190 per cent since 1995. Mobile phones are now involved in 28 per cent of all robberies, compared to eight per cent three years ago. Home Office Minister John Denham, visiting St Olave?s, said: ?The UK phone operators have already agreed some early measures to test ways of putting stolen phones out of action. They’ve also agreed to improve security as investment takes place in new systems. A start has been made, but more needs to be done. It is very important that young people use their phones responsibly and avoid making themselves targets for phone thieves.? The police urge mobile owners to make a note of the IMEI number of your phone and report it to the police if your phone is stolen. The IMEI number is a unique 15-digit serial number which can be accessed by keying *#06# into most phones; or looking behind the battery of your phone.
