The regions went on a higher security alert on July 7.
By lunchtime, Avon and Somerset police were reporting increased high visibility patrols across towns and cities of the force area.
Extra uniformed officers are also patrolling the regionโs shopping centres, including the Mall at Cribbs Causeway and Broadmead in Bristol, to provide, the force reported increased public reassurance. Armed officers were also at Bristol International Airport to again provide reassurance and increase security to staff and travellers.
Assistant Chief Constable Rod Hansen said on July 7: โThe situation in London is continuing to evolve and whilst it is unclear at this stage what has caused the explosions we feel it is important to provide extra reassurance to our communities in Avon and Somerset.
โWe have no information to suggest that our area is under threat, but extra patrols at the airport and in our towns and cities is an obvious precaution to take.
โWe would ask the public to be alert but certainly not unduly alarmed. We ask them to be aware of their own behaviour and that of others; to be suspicious of vehicles parked in places which are inappropriate and of parcels, packages or briefcases left unattended.
โWe have been in liaison with colleagues at British Transport Police, the fire brigade, the ambulance service, local authorities, bus companies and the Highways Agency to make them aware of our plans and raise their awareness to the situation.
โWe are working together to ensure our well rehearsed multi-agency contingency plans are ready in case the situation evolves further.
A suspect package which saw Swindon station evacuated on July 7 morning turned out to be a false alarm. Another suspicious object was found in the town centre at about midday, more people being evacuated; also a false alarm. Glasgow and Edinburgh wereamong cities that saw evacuations after false alerts.
