Pub campaign

by Mark Rowe

A police campaign is aimed at reducing alcohol-related crime by urging pub, club and bar staff to be more vigilant when it comes to serving customers, whilst raising awareness of the law around the sale of alcohol to people who have already had too much.

A Derbyshire Police online surgery is running on Tuesday 22 January between 2pm and 4pm and offers licensees from the Derbyshire Dales and High Peak a chance to speak directly with police about ‘Intoxicated’ and any issues surrounding alcohol sales.

Licensing Sergeant Mark Wright said: “We understand the time pressures faced by licensees, who would struggle to attend a physical meeting when they have a lot on in the day. But by hosting what is essentially an online chat on the police website, they can drop in and out at their convenience and speak directly with us. The main topics will be the ‘Intoxicated’ campaign and issues about licensing in our area, so it’ll be a great source of information for licensed businesses.”

Licensees will be offered advice on the campaign and encouraged to:

Train staff on how to pick up on the early stages of intoxication
Offer soft drinks and free water to people who have had too much
Look out for customers while collecting glasses or clearing tables and advise them on their behaviour
Offer to call a taxi for customers to help them get home safely
Make sure they have adequate staffing levels and working CCTV coverage of their bar or pub.
