Multi-directional camera

by Mark Rowe

Hanwha Vision has launched a compact multi-directional camera. The product combines an 18-times AI-powered PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) module with three 5 megapixel (MP) fixed lenses. The model, PNM-C19183RVTP, is for wide-area coverage, high-resolution zoom, and AI-powered insights, say the developers.

It’s for monitoring open spaces such as parking areas, intersections and stadiums, and can the makers say replace multi-camera setups. The camera uses AI to detect and classify objects in real time, telling apart people, vehicles, faces, and licence plates from irrelevant motion, such as moving shadows or trees. This reduces false alarms and allows operators to focus only on activities and events that require their attention, according to the manufacturer.

Forensic metadata, including object classification (such as person or vehicle), enables forensic search; as does colour detection including clothing (upper/lower) or vehicle colour on the three fixed lens channels. Video analytics, such as virtual line-crossing and loitering detection, help monitor restricted zones, while smart zoom (advanced handover) and auto-tracking enable the PTZ to zoom in on objects identified by the fixed lenses.

Three independently controlled infra-red (IR) zones (up to 15 metres) allow for visibility in low-light while minimising reflections. WiseStreamIII compression reduces bandwidth consumption by up to 80 per cent it’s claimed; and AI-based shutter control minimises motion blur for fast-moving objects. As for the installation, the camera comes with a detachable mounting plate, push-button setup, and automatic PTZ calibration.

The solution is also for indoor installations, even in areas with limited ceiling height. A Hanwha Vision in-ceiling mount accessory is model SHD-2501FPW. For sensitive areas that require a discreet camera presence, the SPB-MDC41V smoked dome cover is an option, the makers add.

The camera features IP66-rated weather protection, IK10-rated impact resistance, and a metal-shielded RJ-45 port to help protect against electrical surges. As for cyber, the camera is FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified, offering cyber security measures including secure boot, firmware encryption, and certificate-based device authentication. The camera works with major VMS (video management software) platforms.
