Video doorbell

by Mark Rowe

Ajax Systems has released Ajax DoorBell, with artificial intelligence (AI), infra-red sensor, and app control. The video doorbell is integrated into the Ajax ecosystem and is available for order. When a visitor rings the doorbell, an Ajax user receives a notification, can see who’s at the door, and can start a conversation via an Ajax app. The product also functions as a security camera, as it notifies about the movement of people, animals, or vehicles, and records video on the Ajax NVR (network video recorder) or Ajax Cloud Storage, which will soon be available among the company’s services. The device can also informs a security responder, even without Wi-Fi, via the Ajax hub.

Two-way audio communication

As for the images, the product has a 4 megapiexl (MP) CMOS camera sensor with infra-red illumination at a distance of up to six metres. The video doorbell applies the company’s proprietary solutions for noise and echo cancellation, and it has a significantly higher volume level compared to other devices on the market, it’s claimed.

AI-driven object recognition

The video doorbell has a AI that recognises people, animals, and vehicles. Users can customise detection and receive notifications for all or only a specific type of object.

Wi-Fi connection

The main communication channel is Wi-Fi with a range of up to 500m in the absence of obstacles, and up to 30m even through concrete walls. This is more than enough for stable operation, for example, in a large private home. For installers, this means less hassle when installing, as there’s no need to position the router directly near the entrance. Even if Wi-Fi fails, the product is still connected to the Ajax hub thanks to the fallback communication channel – the Jeweller and Wings radio protocols. Both proprietary protocols are designed to detect interference and jamming, with frequency hopping besides.

Access to footage

Thanks to JetSparrow’s proprietary video protocol, video is sent from the device to Ajax applications. As for data confidentiality, no third parties are involved in the process. As for aesthetics the product’s compact enclosure can fit in tight spaces, such as narrow door frames or wall-adjacent doorways. Its minimalist design comes in four neutral colours. A coloured LED ring around the button guides users and indicates the state of the device.
