Time stamped proof of presence

by Mark Rowe

Vismo Checkpoints is a ‘proof of presence’ tool from the software firm Vismo.

QR codes let an employer know precisely where staff are in a building or event space. The tool is used with the developers’ Locate & Protect App on smartphones, from where it integrates with Vismo’s secure portal and the employer user’s security protocols. All users have to do is scan strategically placed QR codes with their phone. The app does the rest, giving users a message that the code has been scanned correctly, and uploading the data to the portal. Each scan sends the precise location of the user, via the portal, to the team.

Vismo Global Sales Director Colin Dale says: “Checkpoints enables employers to understand not only the geographic location but also the position of staff in a building at the time of the scan. That could be very useful for field operatives who need to log visits to remote or unmanned locations, as well as increasing safety for hotel staff.” The developers suggest the tool helps with duty of care compliance; and meeting Martyn’s Law, expected to come into force in 2027 as a legal requirement to take measures against the threat of terrorism, according to the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025.

In the US

In the United States, Checkpoints supports Intro. 0991, also known as the Safe Hotels Act, a law of New York City. It sets stronger standards for safety, staffing, and cleaning in hotels. Similarly, Checkpoints can also be used for supporting lone healthcare workers, a sector prone to assault and worse – and shocked by the murder of visiting nurse Joyce Grayson during a scheduled check at a Connecticut halfway house in 2023.

Dale adds: “Checkpoints is also useful for security staff, especially those working alone, who check buildings or other spaces at night. Security companies have to prove to their clients that their staff have been in agreed areas at agreed times. Checkpoints provides time-stamped proof of presence and is an excellent verification method for ensuring accountability and attendance as legally agreed.”

Panic button

He adds: “Vismo’s panic button on the app can be used very precisely with Checkpoints, enabling security personnel and other support staff to reach users more quickly if they feel, or are, in danger.”
