London Build Expo next week

by Mark Rowe

Organisers of London Build Expo next week at Olympia in W14 are hailing it as the largest edition of the show. It’ll open its doors at 9.30am on Wednesday, November 20; and again on the Thursday. London Build (pictured – the 2023 event), co-located with London Build Fire & Security Expo is set to welcome attendees from the UK contractors, architects, developers, house builders, civil engineers, government representatives, and construction people. The event will feature over 700 speakers across 12 CPD-accredited stages, 450 exhibitors, 25 networking parties, DJs, and live music.

Speakers

Speakers include Bruce Braes, Head of Security Consulting at the engineering firm Buro Happold; and Shawn Scott, Chief Information Security Officer – Persimmon Homes. Fire safety as ever is covered, after the Building Safety Act 2022 as part of the response to the 2017 Grenfell fire; speakers include Alfie Hosker, Technical Manager at the police scheme Secured by Design. The show closes at 5.30pm on day one, and 5pm on day two.

For midday on day one, Frank Cannon, co-chair, Built Environment Security Special Interest Group at the Security Institute, has arranged a panel and is speaking on construction site loss and theft prevention. From 2pm on the same building security stage, Richard Flint, Technical and Commercial Lead for Physical Security at the built environment research body BRE Global is heading a panel on products that can help give protection against attack. And from 3pm the Security Institute is holding an ‘open mic’ session on the same stage – do you have a security or risk issue about buildings, or building sites, that you would like solving, or indeed have come up with a solution? Go on up and share it!

Speakers on day two include the consultant Simon Whitehouse; Dave Byng, Head of Security at the builders Balfour Beatty; Robin Edwards, one of the founders of the National Infrastructure Crime Reduction Partnership (NICRP); and Jon Farley, Associate Director, UKIMEA Cyber Security Advisory at the engineering firm Arup. Conference stages and themes include UK Housing, Modern Methods of Construction, Tall Buildings and Skyscrapers, AI and Digital, Sustainability, Fire Safety and Building Security.

Lifecycle

Among the issues for the building sector that security professionals have to take heed of is that new buildings, as the Building Research Establishment (BRE) points out, are typically constructed with a BIM model or digital twin, these are not available for most existing buildings, and their creation is time consuming and expensive. As for sustainability and ‘net zero’ targets, the BRE states that the UK alone contains 30 million residential, public and commercial buildings that will require some form of refurbishment to meet ‘net zero’. What potential then do bollards and barriers, video surveillance cameras and access control readers, have, for adaptation across all stages of the ‘built environment lifecycle’, in the words of the BRE?
