Dave Clark Awards 2024

by Mark Rowe

The fourth year of the Dave Clark Awards in memory of the UK private security stalwart was a one-two for Dawn Dines of the group Stamp Out Spiking. She won the individual, and the group, category, as presented by the umbrella body the Security Commonwealth.

The occasion was the final Security TWENTY event of 2024 by Professional Security Magazine, at Heathrow. The magazine’s MD Roy Cooper was among judges for the awards, that former Commonwealth chair Joe Connell introducing the ceremony described as ‘unique as the person’. In a tribute to Dave Clark, Joe Connell said: “He was one of the big characters in the security sector, one of those people you thought would be around forever.”

He went on: “Dave epitimised what’s best in the security sector; he was a consummate professional, he looked professional, he acted professionally, he looked after the people he worked with in employment and in the sector. He was a mentor to so many people.” Hence the awards, hosted by a different body or place each year.

Another former Commonwealth chair, Jayne King, echoed Joe Connell, not least in that all those named as finalists – and indeed all those nominated – were honoured. In the individual category, finalists were: besides Dawn Dines, the consultant Ross Harvey, the journalist Brian Sims, and the operations director for Safer Business Network, Adam Ratcliffe. And in the group category, besides Stamp Out Spiking, the Confederation of Professional Investigators and Safer Business Networks.

Conference

Earlier, a new feature of ST was a conference inside the exhibition show floor. Speakers were Andy Payne (from perimeter intrusion detection product firm Magos), David Dorton (distributor CIE Group), Paul Green (Digital Barriers), Tim Molden (staffing the ASIS UK stand, but wearing two hats, as he spoke about the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals), Alex Pose-Gill (COP Security), Mike Gillespie (of the information security awareness consultancy Advent IM, on penetration testing), Mike Ward (Hikvision, on their access control and transparent LED signage), Duncan Cooke (Stratus), Janice McMahon (of the medical kit supplier Steroplast, featured in the November edition of Professional Security Magazine), and Billy Hopkins (Synguard).
