Govia Thameslink Railway contract

by Mark Rowe

The guarding contractor Amulet has a security contract with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR). The three-year contract, with the option of two more, will see Amulet deliver guarding and technology services across the rail operator’s stations, depots, and seasonal operations.

Amulet will provide 24/7 manned guarding at ten stations and five depots across the GTR network, supported by some 30 station-based officers and 22 depot security workers. This supplements GTR’s other security arrangements that includes teams of Travel Safe Officers and Rail Enforcement Officers (REOs) who support the British Transport Police (BTP). The contractor adds that its services will include front-of-house operations at the office Go Ahead House, mobile CCTV, and the integration of technology to and enable real-time monitoring.

The contract includes Operation OLAF, the rail industry’s annual Christmas stabling programme. When trains are parked out of service between 24 and 27 December, Amulet will deploy specialist teams at 21 stabling locations nationally. These teams, comprising over 100 security officers, will deliver 24/7 protection to combat vandalism – as featured in the April edition of Professional Security Magazine, a common risk to trains while they are stabled.

Amulet was selected following a competitive tender process. The firm pointed to its detailed mobilisation planning, performance management systems, and commitment to continuous improvement, including ‘lessons learned’ reviews. The company’s technology approach – combining mobile CCTV, command and control systems, and real-time monitoring – was also praised.

Kieran Mackie, managing director of Amulet, pictured, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to deepen our relationship with the rail sector and deliver security services that put passenger and staff safety first. We’re proud to share GTR’s commitment to high standards, innovation, and community impact, and we look forward to working closely together to deliver a safe and welcoming environment across the network.”

And Mike Boyce, head of security and policing at GTR, said: “We were impressed with Amulet’s clear understanding of our operational requirements, which supplement our many other security measures and the work of the British Transport Police, and the quality of their mobilisation planning. Their approach demonstrated strong attention to resilience, staff training, and innovative use of technology, all crucial in delivering a consistent, high-quality service across our network. We look forward to working in partnership to enhance safety and security for our passengers and colleagues.”
