Thermal camera

by Mark Rowe

The network video product manufacturer Axis Communications has launched a thermal camera that can detect and verify 24-7, the Swedish firm says. The halogen-free camera is for perimeter protection, the makers add, and offers a low carbon footprint and low power consumption.

The AXIS Q1971-E offers detection and verification even in low contrast scenes and isn’t affected by weather or the light (or lack of it), meaning a lower false alarm rate, the company says. Thermal imaging doesn’t allow for identification, so giving privacy. With five lens alternatives (7 mm, 13 mm, 19 mm, 25 mm, and 35 mm), it delivers detection to meet specific needs. Thermal palettes make it more efficient to interpret a scene, while electronic image stabilization (EIS) ensures stable, reliable video in all settings.

Thermal cameras use thermal imaging to capture the infrared radiation emitted by objects. It uses this data to create visual representations of temperature differences, enabling the detection of heat signatures invisible to the eye; there’s no hiding from it.

The Q1971-E thermal camera comes with AXIS Motion Guard, AXIS Fence Guard, and AXIS Loitering Guard, installed. AXIS Perimeter Defender is also available for making it possible to detect and classify humans and other objects. As the product is built on a platform, the user can add third-party analytics to trigger events.

The camera includes two input-output (I/O) ports for connecting external devices. Edge-to-edge technology makes it possible to connect, for instance, a horn speaker to enable audio alarms that deter, warn, and notify a trespasser. Axis Edge Vault safeguards the device and offers FIPS 140-2 Level 2 certified key storage and operations.

Detection and verification

Thermal imaging can detect humans, animals, and other objects even in adverse weather and poor light. Unlike conventional cameras, this technology only allows for detection, determining a person’s shape and size. The product firm argues that thermal imaging also offers a cost-effective way to protect property. With long detection range, fewer cameras are needed to cover areas; and thermal cameras need lower power consumption and can detect in darkness without the need for extra lighting.
