Screening for restoring UK integrity

by Mark Rowe

As the Chief Operating Officer of Matrix Security Watchdog, I am acutely aware of the increasing challenges posed by a decline in societal integrity, writes Susie Thomson, pictured.

The recent ONS report highlights a concerning trend: a 30 per cent increase in retail theft since 2023, reflecting a broader shift in societal values where truth and honesty are increasingly compromised for self-gain. This alarming statistic underscores the critical need for stringent screening measures, particularly robust pre- and post-employment screening programs, to mitigate these risks and uphold ethical standards.

The ONS (Office for National Statistics) report reveals that the propensity to engage in dishonest behaviour is rising, fuelled by a societal acceptance of such actions. This has created a challenging environment not just for controlling theft but for maintaining integrity in various sectors, especially in the workplace. Identity verification and thorough background checks are not just procedural formalities; they are fundamental safeguards to ensure that individuals with questionable integrity do not enter or remain within our professional environments.

I strongly support the broader sentiment echoed by the DWP spokesman: “This government will not tolerate fraud or waste anywhere in public services, including in the social security system. We are determined to reduce fraud and error and are currently exploring all options on how best to achieve our goal.” This unwavering commitment to eliminating fraud and dishonesty is essential for maintaining the integrity and sustainability of all systems, public and private.

Screening is a powerful tool in this fight against the erosion of integrity. By rigorously verifying identities and checking the background and character of individuals, we can significantly reduce the risk of unethical behaviour infiltrating our institutions. This process involves comprehensive background checks, cross-referencing data, and employing advanced technologies to detect and prevent fraud and other dishonest activities.

The cost of fraud and dishonesty extends beyond financial losses. It undermines public trust, erodes the ethical fabric of society, and diverts resources away from those who genuinely deserve them. By implementing robust screening measures, we can protect public and private funds, ensure fair and ethical conduct, and uphold the social contract between organizations and their stakeholders.

In conclusion, the rise in dishonest behaviour necessitates a proactive and determined response. At Matrix Security Watchdog, we are committed to supporting both public and private sectors through comprehensive screening solutions. By doing so, we can help create a more secure, transparent, and trustworthy environment, ensuring that integrity remains a core value in all aspects of society.
