In-car ANPR

by Msecadm4921

Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) product manufacturer PIPS has released what the firm calls the next generation of PAGIS, an ANPR graphic interface system, with GPS mapping added.

Developed with police forces, according to the manufacturers, PAGIS is an in-car ANPR computer system with touch screen operation, compliant, the makers add, with the ACPO National ANPR Standards (NAAS). The product controls the cameras via a touch screen pan and tilt mechanism fitted in the car. The software reads the number plate provided by the camera and searches its databases to check if the plate is listed. Even with millions of records in the database, PAGIS will return an answer in a fraction of a second, it is claimed, for cross-matching against databases.

Added GPS mapping allows users to locate a specific vehicle and to zoom in to street level to pinpoint the exact position where it was last seen, including the date and time. The system will also provide a map to direct the user to the vehicleโ€™s location. Features include:

Prioritisation of hits/alerts in order of importance

menu system, one touch control

offender images added if required

PAGIS logs all vehicles passing the camera field of view

Retrospective database search

PIPS claim to have solved the problem whereby normal vehicle windows are virtually opaque to infrared by collaborating with Pilkington Automotive to design and manufacture a rear window which transmits IR, allowing PIPS to offer internally mounted IR cameras for mobile use. Data captured by the mobile equipment is encrypted and exported to a back office system of choice and updated in real time between the back office and mobile systems. PAGIS also has the capability to import data from third party databases in any format, the makers add.

What they say

Paul Negus, PIPS Technologyโ€™s Managing Director, says: "PAGIS is already in 24-hour use with police forces; the additional mapping facility simplifies proactive policing. GPS takes police ANPR systems to the next level by turning them from reactive systems to proactive. Now an officer can turn on the system in the morning to check the mapping software and actively search for the locations most likely to generate wanted vehicles."
