Cloud-based access control platform

by Mark Rowe

The access control and security product manufacturer Suprema has launched BioStar Air. The firm describes it as the first and only cloud-based access control platform designed to natively support biometric authentication. Featuring zero-on-premise architecture, BioStar Air is for use by small and medium enterprises (SMEs), multi-branch companies, and mixed-use buildings, the product firm says.

The product was first shown at ISC West 2025, in Las Vegas in March. Unlike traditional systems tied to on-premise servers and controllers, BioStar Air is built entirely in the cloud, the developers report. Smart readers with controllers connect to the network, streamlining installation, reducing infrastructure costs, and allowing scaling across locations.

By processing biometric data at the edge, the platform ensures authentication even during network outages. Thanks to its federated architecture, employees can use the same face or finger template company-wide. The product supports a range of credentials – facial authentication, RFID cards, mobile access, and QR codes. Fingerprint recognition and Apple Wallet support are to come.

Intuitive web and mobile interfaces let administrators manage users and devices in real time from anywhere. A user can centralize access control across sites with minimal hardware, the company adds.

Hanchul Kim, CEO of Suprema Inc said: โ€œBuilding access control infrastructure can be overwhelming, with servers, controllers, and endless IT overhead. With BioStar Air, weโ€™ve thrown all that out to deliver on our vision for the future of access control: cloud first, biometric-native, and effortless to scale. Organizations can finally gain the flexibility and confidence they need to secure todayโ€™s mobile, distributed workplaces.โ€
