License plate camera

by Mark Rowe

New from the network video product manufacturer Axis Communications are two cameras for traffic surveillance and smart city initiatives, that can capture license plate images 24/7, the Swedish firm says.

AXIS Q1800-LE License Plate Camera is preconfigured for license plate capture at speeds of up to 250 km/h (155 mph). It works with edge or server-based LPR (license plate recognition) software from other vendors, so customers can choose the recognition analytics that suits them, the developer says. The Q1800-LE-3 is an all-in-one license plate kit that includes everything in one device. With AXIS License Plate Verifier pre-installed, it can read plates at speeds of up to 200 km/h (124 mph). An edge-based license plate recognition approach means the camera manages processing and storage, cutting out the need for servers and reducing bandwidth requirements, the company adds.

Both cameras can cover distances of up to 100 metres (328 ft) during daylight. In darkness, they can cover distances up to 50 m (164 ft), and up to 100 m (328 ft) with the optional accessory AXIS T90D20 IR-LED Illuminator. As for set-up, image algorithms are pre-configured to focus solely on license plate capture. Built on the Axis open platform, they integrate with VMS (video management systems) and support a range of third-party applications, the makers add. As for performance in extreme weather, they include a weather shield and can withstand winds of up to 60 m/s (134 mph). Electronic image stabilization gives stable images when the camera is subject to vibrations. Installation accessories are available for mounting options; and the cameras can blend in with grey coloured housing and a black weather shield.
