Family Business of the Year

by Mark Rowe

The guarding firm MAN Commercial Protection was named as Business Desk’s Family Business of the Year. Judges praised the Shirley-based company for the way it has maintained its close-knit culture while increasing its workforce to 1700 people, with an internal comms strategy and an open-door policy.

The company, a member of the ACS Pacesetters group of highest-scoring Security Industry Authority-approved contractors, was also praised for the community spirit it engenders. Several security officers having been with the firm for ten or 20 years, a rarity in the sector.

“We’ve had quite a year of being recognised, with this latest award taking the number of accolades we have won to seven,” said Iain McCallister, who runs MAN Commercial Protection with his wife and HR Director Traci McCallister.

“This one means a lot as we are very proud of our ‘people first’ culture that we feel is reflected in the way we work, whether you are a team member, supplier or a customer. We’re growing rapidly with over 100 new sites taken on since the beginning of 2024. However, as we get bigger, we never want to lose sight of what makes us different and that’s ensuring our family values are at the heart of everything we do.”

Last year was the firm’s busiest yet for event work, covering the London Marathon, some of the Taylor Swift Eras tour concerts and assignments for Queensberry Promotions in the UK and overseas, including the Fury versus Usyk fights. In the corporate world the company has seen new contracts to provide guarding, CCTV, key-holding, concierge and close protection services for names in the automotive, banking, finance, property and oil sectors. The firm’s Training Academy was founded in 2023 with a focus on giving MAN staff and those in the wider industry access to first aid and SIA training and further development.

Traci McCallister, HR Director, added: “Our business has been family-owned and run in this way for over 32 years. The Senior Leadership Team are hands-on and live and breathe the day-to-day operations, allowing both the business and our clients to benefit from a quick decision-making cycle.”
