The network video product manufacturer Axis Communications has announced the ninth generation of its system-on-chip (SoC).
ARTPEC-9 offers, the Swedish firm says, low bitrate, AI-powered analytics, quality imaging and cybersecurity. Axis will begin including the ARTPEC-9 SoC in select network video products in early 2025. ARTPEC-9 supports the AV1 video encoding standard from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). With the company’s Zipstream feature (algorithms in the camera that analyse the video stream in real-time), AV1 makes for reduced storage cost without sacrificing forensic detail, according to the developers. ARTPEC-9 is behind the image processing under difficult light conditions, such as Lightfinder, and Axis Forensic Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). The firm adds that ARTPEC-9 allows more advanced AI analytics that ‘see’ further away; analytics that detect smaller objects and can trigger earlier to operators. More accuracy of analytics means recognising and differentiating between more object classes for more granular, nuanced, object classification.
Cyber
As for cybersecurity, ARTPEC-9 is developed in-house, meaning Axis controls the production process. Axis introduces AV1, an open video encoding standard for streaming media to the surveillance industry. AV1 is supported by AXIS Camera Station (the company’s own interface for managing cameras). Providers of video management solftware (VMS) such as Genetec and Milestone will be adding support for AV1, with more developments under way, Axis adds.
Johan Paulsson, Chief Technology Officer at Axis, pictured, says: “ARTPEC-9, with its industry-first support for AV1, allows for attractive bitrate and extended client compatibility. It’s really a win for the industry. The keywords are ‘easy access,’ and ‘open’, which align perfectly with how we work to fulfil our promise of innovating for a smarter, safer world. Plus, like all our SoCs, ARTPEC-9 is made expressly for high-quality network video. And, as always, we retain complete control of the SoC production process.”
