Golden Threadโ becoming increasingly vital to construction, ASSA ABLOY has launched a new guide and related CPD (continuous professional development around โThe โGolden Threadโโ. The physical security product manufacturer sets out to explain what the concept means from design stage through the construction phase and building management, detailing who’s responsible for what, and how they can ensure they comply. ASSA ABLOYโs RIBA approved CPD on the topic details the issues.
Peter Ashworth, Director & Head of Specification & OEM at ASSA ABLOY, says: โThe โGolden Threadโ is here to stay and only those who embrace it will prosper in the construction industry of the future. The RIBA accredited CPD along with the guide will help all those involved in new build construction understand their responsibilities so they can ensure compliance and safety as outlined in the new Building Safety Act.โ
The guide makes clear that all in the build process have a set of responsibilities under the โGolden Threadโ, which derives from Dame Judith Hackittโs โBuilding a Safer Futureโ report, written in the wake of the Grenfell fire of 2017. These include ensuring that plans, specifications, and material choices are documented and accessible; documenting regulatory compliance information; and considering the long-term implications of design decisions and materials used to ensure the โGolden Threadโ remains unbroken post-handover.
Cloud-based tool
The document features Openings Studio, ASSA ABLOYโs cloud-based, BIM plug-in tool for the creation, visualisation, modification and management of door openings. Each door logged in Openings Studio is automatically assigned a unique smart tag that can be affixed to the door, enabling direct access to details including installation, inspection and service history. Additionally, the platform ensures all operational guides, such as technical data sheets and warranty information, can be stored in one place and is accessible at the click of a button.
Peter adds: โThe new guidelines require every organisation involved in the design, build and maintenance process to keep a record of everything they do. Thatโs exactly what Openings Studio provides for doors. It allows images, documents, specs and comments to be uploaded throughout the process. This means there will always be evidence that they have met the requirements, protecting them against the potential repercussions of not meeting the guidelines.โ
