MFF annual conference

by Mark Rowe

The annual conference of the Midlands Fraud Forum – its tenth anniversary – is on Thursday, February 23, 2017 in Birmingham. Chaired again by Mark Surguy, pictured, the MFF chair, a partner at law firm Weightmans LLP, the event will hear from various perspectives on fraud.

In the morning, for example, Commander Chris Greany – Head of Economic Crime Directorate, City of London Police, and a national spokesman on countering fraud will speak, and West Midlands Police Det Supt Richard Agar will set out the force’s work. Chris King of Dudley Trading Standards will describe how ‘rogue traders’ target their victims. And Tony Sales, the former fraudster now a tester of security and loss prevention products, will give his point of view. Polly Sprenger, Counsel at law firm Eversheds LLP, will talk of ‘the fraudster in court’.

In the afternoon, speakers are Glenn Wicks – Deputy Chief Investigation Officer, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; Leslie Cuthbert – Crown Court Recorder and Solicitor-Advocate; and – on the ‘dark web’ – Azeem Aleem – Director for the Advanced Cyber Defense Services Practice – EMEA at the cyber firm RSA.

The MFF also holds half-day masterclasses; such as one on insolvency and company fraud in Nottingham on Wednesday morning, January 11; more are planned for 2017.

For more about the all-day event, at the Tally Ho Conference Centre on Pershore Road, Edgbaston, visit www.midlandsfraudforum.co.uk.
