Banking Conference

by msecadm4921

Lessons after the Securitas warehouse robbery are among the subjects at the British Bankers’ Association’s fifth annual security conference.

It runs on April 17 at the City Conference Centre, London. Kent Police Detective Supt Tim Smith, Head Major Crime and Detective Sgt Andy Nicoll, Serious Crime, are invited to speak about the Tonbridge case.

Organisers make the point that the financial services industry is often the target of organised crime and often these attacks are targeted on the physical, shop face of financial institutions. The Tonbridge robbery in February 2006 illustrated that despite security systems, the industry is not infallible. Last year also saw an increase in violent attacks on bank staff and CVIT remains high on the agenda for those working on improving physical security.

The conference will again provide a forum for discussion and sharing of experiences. Representatives from Kent Police will join the BBA to provide insight into the Tonbridge robbery with contributions also from the Home Office, police and banks.

Among the invited speakers are Dave Anscomb, Head of Retail Facilities and Security Management, Abbey; and on violence against staff, Bill Marriott ACIB, Head of Security Services, Security and Fraud Risk Europe, HSBC Bank plc.

Home Office minister Vernon Coaker MP will report on the work of the CVIT Roundtable, set up last year. Also looking at what can be done to tackle cash and valuables in transit crime, Commander Sue Akers, Trident/Criminal Networks, Met Police. Other topics include ATM fraud; recovery of counterfeit banknotes; and training methods to diffuse violent situations.
