The 2002 national winners of the BSIA’s annual security officer awards, sponsored by specialist security industry law firm Camberford Law, received their awards from HRH The Princess Royal, President of the patrons of charity Crime Concern, at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in July. For the second year running more than 200 nominations were received, the BSIA report. National winners were (service to the customer): Jay Anderton of Securicor Security Services, for his achievements in retail security, always maintaining a professional and calm approach in the face of severe provocation; Patricia Hunter of Chubb Security Personnel, for her excellent leadership skills in managing an eight-person team responsible for a high-tech gatehouse and a range of security services; and Andrew Stylioti of Lynx Security Services, for his dedication to his work at Great Ormond Street Hospital over the last four years, and his relationship with staff, parents and patients.

Outstanding Act
<br><br>
Bam Bello of Securicor Security Services, who single-handedly prevented a robbery by three intruders, protecting in the process three ladies who were being attacked; Matthew Bridger of Reliance Security Services, for his courage and quick thinking in rescuing the occupants of a burning building; and Alan Brierley of Group 4 Total Security, who rescued a young man from the River Mersey.

Best Newcomer

Tony Callaghan of The Corps, who has shown commitment to his role, developing and operating the post room, setting up a staff database of 1,000 employees and introducing a new roster. Neil Duggan of Initial Security, for showing skill and sensitivity in dealing with potentially violent patients. David Stewart of Reliance Security Services, who has shown professionalism and commitment in the demanding role of mobile supervisor for 15 sites.

Best Use of Technology
<br><br>
Eddie Frame of Group 4 Total Security, whose achievements include introduction and operation of a new access control system, creating a secure control room, and setting up an airport style scanning system to prevent theft. Chris Pratt of The Watch Security, who has not only used his IT skills to reinforce his client’s security function, but has also provided IT support services to the company. Craig Smith of Group 4 Total Security, who has developed a software programme that speeds up the stationery ordering process for a Government department, as well as removing human error and enabling detailed analysis of data.

The Chubb Security Personnel Team from the Kirkgate Centre, for their professional, brave and assertive response in dealing with the riots in Bradford last July.The Securicor Security Services Team from the Sunderland Stadium of Light, who, over a five year period, have maintained the balance between crime prevention and ensuring football supporters enjoy their day out. The Securicor Security Services Team from Huntingdon Life Sciences, who have consistently applied themselves with dedication and restraint in difficult conditions, while also carrying out their day-to-day duties.
