Infosecurity Europe 2018 opens

by Mark Rowe

Day one of the three-day Infosecurity Europe show in London this week heard Baroness Dido Harding, Chair of NHS Improvement, to present the Opening Keynote on View from the Board: A CEOโ€™s Perspective on Cybersecurity. She drew on seven years as the head of telecoms plc TalkTalk when she led the company through one of Britainโ€™s most high-profile cyber-attacks. The firm was fined ยฃ400,000 by the data protection regulator the ICO.

Baroness Harding said: โ€œThe digital world is a great thing but only if it is civilised. Transparency helps that civilisation and improves safety. Our generation is building the social, moral and legal scaffolding of the digital world. Both tech and commercial functions need to engage closely with each other and debate key issues openly in order to create the right rules and regulations, improve education and awareness, and develop the right culture for a strong digital world. CEOs need to spend quality time with their organisationโ€™s brightest IT stars and learn what they are worried about. Cybersecurity is at the heart of this โ€“ it shouldnโ€™t be all cloak and dagger, it should be a risk that is acknowledged and mitigated.โ€

Other speakers on the showโ€™s keynote stage at Olympia (pictured) included Kevin Fielder, CISO at Just Eat; Emma Smith, Group Technology Security Director at Vodafone; Corey Scott, CISO at LinkedIn; and Mun Valiji, CISO at Sainsburyโ€™s.

A new feature for 2018 is โ€œGeek Streetโ€ – described by event organisers as an immersive zone where information security practitioners will share technical research. Today at 1pm for example Ken Munro, Partner, Pen Test Partners will talk about security of the IoT in ‘Hardware Hacking: What Can Adult Toys Tell Us About the State of the IoT?’
