Olympia Expo preview

by Mark Rowe

Project Interknow – 3D Printed Firearms is a closed-door event arranged by the National Crime Agency (NCA), part of the International Security Expo at London Olympia on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 27 and 28.

Project Interknow is the UK national response to the emerging threat of privately manufactured and 3D printed firearms. It’s joint work by the UK’s Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP), the Home Office and the NCA, which leads the national response to the threat from the criminal use of firearms.

The event will involve guest speakers from the European Union’s policing agency EUROPOL, ATF, Dutch Police, Kings College London (KCL) and Armament Research Services (ARES), covering the history of 3D printed firearms from the Liberator to current models. CTP and the NCA will also outline the threat, detailing case studies, investigative opportunities, and intelligence requirements to enhance law enforcement and private industry’s collective response.

For some background on 3D weapons, visit the Europol website for a recent arrest of a suspect in Slovakia; who allegedly published instructions and diagrams for manufacturing improvised cold weapons, home-produced automatic firearms, explosives and mines, and instructions for sabotage attacks.

Rachael Shattock, Event Director, International Security Expo, said: “With less than three weeks until we return to London Olympia, we’re delighted to offer a sneak peek into some of the exciting live demonstrations that will be taking place on the show floor at this year’s International Security Expo. The opportunity to see all the latest innovations live in person is an unmissable chance to see the breadth and quality of technology on display. We’re proud of the opportunities the event offers to suppliers and buyers in the security sector to come together and drive forward innovation in safety and security.”

As ever at the Expo there’s a full couple of days of speakers on risk, counter-terror and resilience besides security. The speakers include Mike Croll; several on the proposed Protect Duty, including campaigners Figen Murray and Nick Aldworth, and police; Darren Stanton on ‘Body Language and Deception Detection’; Sergeant Peter Lucas, Community and Business Engagement, City of London Police, on Project Servator; and Philip Grindell, Threat Intelligence Specialist at consultancy Defuse on fixated and lone actor threats.

An invited panel to close day one is Barrie Millett, Director of Intelligence Operations and Joey Hills, Head of Intelligence at Mitie; and John Redfern, Group Security Services Manager – Equipment at supermarket chain Sainsbury’s.
