Security Commonwealth at IFSEC 2018

by Mark Rowe

The UK Security Commonwealth is hosting its first public event at IFSEC 2018. On day one of the three day exhibition, Tuesday, June 19, it will be introducing the concept of ‘Grey Spaces’ and why they should be secured.

‘Grey Space’ is the term used to label the undefended areas between security protected zones. In a grey space a criminal or terrorist can prepare for their attack feeling unobserved, safe and with a low risk of detection. The current Threat Level from international terrorism in the UK as set by MI5 remains at severe, meaning that an attack is regarded as likely. The 2017 terrorist attacks at the Manchester Arena, Westminster Bridge, Finsbury Park and Borough Market were initiated in ‘Grey Spaces’.

The session will consider how security design, security personnel and technology can help turn grey spaces into defensible spaces to create a perception of risk for a perpetrator planning an attack. For more on the session from 1pm to 1.50pm including a chance to quiz the panel, visit https://www.ifsec.events/international/agenda.

The speakers are Chief Supt Nick Aldworth, Simon Whitehouse CPP PSP CSyP from SGW Consultants, a main board director of the Security Institute; and Chris Aldous CPP PSP of Design Security Limited, a main board director of ASIS UK.

Joe Connell, Chair of the Security Commonwealth, who’s also chairman of the Association of Security Consultants (ASC) said: “I am delighted we have been able to host this event and I hope it will generate some keen interest among attendees. It is also a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of the Security Commonwealth and its objectives in the wider security community.”
